Drug Allergy Testing: Find Out Which Medications Are Safe for You

Don't let a childhood rash or an unconfirmed reaction limit your medical care today. We evaluate suspected medication allergies to find the truth, helping you avoid unnecessary medication restrictions and ensuring you have access to the best possible treatments when you get sick.

What is a Drug Allergy Evaluation?

Millions of people have "allergies" listed on their medical charts for medications they can actually tolerate perfectly fine. We evaluate patients with suspected medication allergies to determine their true allergy status. By using detailed medical histories, safe skin testing, and monitored medication challenges, we can definitively prove whether an allergy exists. Our goal is to safely remove false allergy labels ("delabeling") and provide you with a clear, medically verified list of safe treatment options.

What patients can expect:

The safe removal of outdated or incorrect allergy labels from their medical records.

Access to safer, more effective, and often less expensive first-line medications (like targeted antibiotics) when they are sick.

Drug Allergy Evaluations can help with issues like:

  • "My mom said I got a rash from penicillin when I was a baby, so I've avoided it for 30 years."

  • 🌿

  • "I need to take antibiotics, but the alternatives my doctor gave me have terrible side effects."

  • 🏡

  • "I broke out in hives the last time I took Advil, and now I don't know what is safe for a headache."

  • 🌿

  • "I have to get a cavity filled and I'm terrified I'm allergic to the numbing shot."

  • 🏡

  • "I had a weird reaction to a medication years ago, but I don't know if it was an allergy or just a side effect."

  • 🌿

  • "My surgeon wants me cleared by an allergist before my upcoming operation."

Safely Finding the Truth

Testing for a drug allergy requires an incredibly high level of expertise and a tightly controlled environment. Our Board-Certified Allergists and Immunologists are experts in pharmacologic reactions. They understand the difference between a true immune-mediated allergy and a simple medication side effect (like an upset stomach). We conduct all testing under strict medical supervision, prioritizing your safety above all else.

What to expect at your visit

Step 1

The Detective Work

We start with a deep dive into your medical history. We’ll discuss exactly what medication you took, when you took it, and what your specific symptoms were.

Step 2

The Skin Test

For certain drugs (like penicillin), we begin with a gentle, minimally invasive skin prick test to check for immediate allergic antibodies.

Step 3

The Oral Challenge

If the skin test is negative, or if skin testing isn't available for the specific drug, we perform a "Graded Oral Challenge." You will take a tiny, safely monitored dose of the medication in our clinic to definitively prove your body can tolerate it.

Not sure what you need?

That's exactly what we're here for. You don't need to have it all figured out before you see us. Book a general consultation, tell us your symptoms, and our specialists will guide you to the right tests and treatments.

Answering your questions

Everything you need to know about our bespoke, patient-centered approach to your health.

How do I schedule an appointment?

To provide you with the best possible care, we use a direct intake process. Please fill out our New Patient Booking Form linked on this site, and our front desk will email or call you directly to secure your appointment time.

Do you take insurance?

Yes, we accept most major insurance plans, and you'll always be treated as a person, not just a number. Plans we accept include Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Blue Care Network, Priority Health, HAP, Aetna, Cigna, Humana Medicare Advantage, Molina, McLaren, Original Medicare and Michigan Medicaid. We don't accept UnitedHealthcare or Silver Saver plans.

See our full list of accepted insurance plans, or call (248) 546-9100 to confirm your coverage.

How long will my first visit take?

You should expect to spend about an hour and a half to two hours at your initial visit. Unlike other clinics where you might only see a doctor for 15 minutes, we take the time to go over every potential allergic disorder and conduct all necessary testing.

What makes your approach different from other allergists?

We offer an "academic experience" similar to what you would find at major university hospitals like Northwestern or Harvard, right here in the Detroit suburbs. We follow evidence-based medicine while keeping the patient at the absolute center of the experience.

What specialized procedures do you perform?

In addition to standard allergy care, we offer advanced procedures that many local allergists do not perform. These include supervised drug and food challenges (administering a medicine or food in-clinic to verify an allergy) and desensitization protocols (slowly building up your tolerance to a specific medication).
